Biography

Emanuel Serra is a freelance Canadian composer whose concert works have been performed by prestigious Canadian ensembles. His work both as a film scorer and as a soundtrack vocalist have received mention in several awards, including the 2001 Columbus Award and a 2003 Juno nomination for best film score.

Excerpts from his Mass For The Ascension were performed in May 2004 by Peter Togni and the St. Mary's Basilica Gallery Choir (Halifax, NS), October 2004 by the JungBalsan Catholic Choir (Ilsan, S. Korea) May 2007 by Portugal's Evora University Choir, Goncalo Lourenco conducting, and in June 2009 by Lisbon's distinguished Coro Odyssea chamber choir, Joao Jose Lourenco conducting. His Christmas Mass (2006) was premiered in services in Mokpo and Seoul, South Korea.

Emanuel Serra also manages Serra Music choral publications, the most popular of which - A Ghanaian Medley- has been sold and circulated in Eastern Canada, the United States and Spain, and won honorable mention in the 2003 Cambridge Madrigal Singers Competition. A Ghanaian Medley was premiered in 2002 by Novus Chamber Choir, and by the Halifax Camerata Singers in 2003, led by Jeff Joudrey.

As a tenor vocalist, his improvisational work in Sandy Moore's 2003 soundtrack to The Wild Dogs (IMX films, Thom Fitzgerald director) was recognized with a Juno nomination for best score. His larger body of artistic work was recognized in 2002 with the Nova Scotia Cultural Arts Award for outstanding achievement and ongoing commitment to promoting racial harmony and cultural awareness in Canadian communities. Emanuel Serra is a recipient of the 2004 Copa Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements by Portuguese Canadians.

He currently resides in South Korea and summers in Atlantic Canada.
